Diversity Education and Cultural Awareness

Diversity Education & Cultural Awareness (DECA)

Rick Backlund, DOT
Chairperson

DECA was formed to consolidate the previous six Special Emphasis Councils: American Indian Federal Employees Council, Asian Pacific American Federal Employees Council, Black Federal Employees Council, Disabled Federal Employees Council, Hispanic Federal Employees Council, and the Women’s Federal Employee Council.  Over time, DECA has broadened its diversity emphasis to include the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community and the various faith communities represented in the United States.  DECA works on a vast array of diversity centered projects including: a celebration and training luncheon for Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Unity Day (a semi-annual day of diversity training), and other forms of diversity training, cultural celebrations, and community outreach.

This committee meets the first Thursday of each month at 1:30 p.m. at various locations.

Mission

The DECA Committee’s mission is to foster cultural awareness, develop leadership skills and cultivate the diverse heritage of the government community while promoting equal opportunity and fair treatment for all persons.
