From Counseling to Taking Action: Dealing with Poor Performance

Addressing poor performance can seem like not just an uphill battle but a losing battle as well. This course walks supervisors through each sequential step required before taking action on poor performance. It includes guidance on improving communication and early counseling, providing an opportunity to improve, and differentiating between the two authorities used for performance-based actions (5 U.S.C. Chapter 43 and 75) when performance continues to decline. Supervisors will receive practical checklists for each step in the process to ensure actions will be sustained.

After attending this training, participants will be able to:

  • Understand how to prevent poor performance
  • Distinguish between conduct and performance
  • Provide early and effective performance counseling
  • Provide employees with a formal opportunity to improve through managing a Performance Improvement¬† Plan (PIP)
  • Identify stumbling blocks and best practices to taking action
